5G for Sports and Wellness

BASE5G is a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the Lombardy Region with resources from the POR 2014-2020. The final event took place on October 7 and 8, 2022, at the Bovisa campus of the Politecnico di Milano.

The event showcased the results achieved in the project, which focused on creating smart environments and services based on 5G connectivity. It featured a panel discussion titled “What Can 5G Do for You?” and a demo session called “The 5G Demonstrated,” where prototypes created by the project’s partner companies, in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, were presented.

The BASE5G project aimed to develop advanced services for citizens that are increasingly automatic and user-friendly. The project’s vision was that environments themselves (homes, cars, public spaces, schools, offices, sports fields, etc.) would adapt to the end-users who “occupy” them, offering personalized services and potentially modifying the physical space in which the user is immersed.

Achieving this vision requires the interaction and integration of various enabling skills and technologies, including:

  • Devices and sensors for collecting environmental data;
  • 5G infrastructure with ultra-broadband, low latency, and high reliability;
  • Centralized and distributed tools and architectures for processing this data to extract information;
  • Immersive and simultaneously user-friendly interfaces for visualization and interaction with the end-user.

As part of this project, L.I.F.E. Italia, with the support of Politecnico di Milano, developed new wearable devices for monitoring events and sports activities within urban “smart communities” (such as running races, group workouts in gyms and/or on the streets, and bike-sharing users), as well as a “smart personal assistant” platform for connecting personal devices with the urban IoT ecosystem via 5G.

Below are the operational actions undertaken by L.I.F.E. Italia for the execution of the project:

  1. Identification of scenarios;
  2. Design and development of the “smart personal assistant”;
  3. Design and development of new wearable devices;
  4. Design and development of AI algorithms for individual athletes/users;
  5. Design and development of AI algorithms for managing events/team activities;
  6. HW/SW integration and training of artificial intelligence algorithms;
  7. Testing and experimental evaluations.
